Business valuation, explained

How is a business valued?

A business is typically valued three ways: by the cash it is expected to generate (a discounted-cash-flow, or DCF, model), by what buyers pay for comparable companies (market multiples such as EV/EBITDA and P/E), and by the fair value of its net assets. A considered valuation blends all three into a single concluded figure with a range around it. This tool applies all three and shows every step.

What is my company worth as a multiple of profit or EBITDA?

Private companies commonly trade at roughly 4–8× EBITDA or 7–12× net profit, but the right multiple depends on growth, margins, customer concentration, sector and how dependent the business is on its owner. The engine applies sector-appropriate multiples to your normalized earnings and cross-checks the result against a discounted-cash-flow value.

What do "normalized" or "adjusted" earnings mean?

Normalization strips out one-off, personal and above/below-market items, such as an owner's salary that differs from a market rate, so profit reflects what a new owner would actually earn. Buyers and valuers price the business on this normalized figure, not the raw accounting profit.

Is my financial data private?

Yes. All calculations run locally in your browser and your figures are never uploaded. You only share contact details if you choose to get the full report on your own data.

How long does a valuation take?

A few minutes. With one year of financials you can reach a concluded value and download a full report in a single session, then refine the assumptions whenever you like.

What does the Business Valuation Calculator do?

This tool estimates a value range for your business from its earnings, projections and common valuation methods. It is a starting point for conversations about a sale, an investment or a change of partners, not a formal valuation report.

How to use it

  1. Enter your base-year figures, projections and risk inputs.
  2. Review the value under each method, including discounted cash flow and adjusted net assets.
  3. Download the full report to keep the results and discuss them with us.

Business Valuation Calculator: questions and answers

Is this a formal valuation?

No. A formal valuation needs a review of your financial statements, assumptions and market evidence. This tool gives an indicative range to help you prepare.

Why does the value differ between methods?

Each method looks at value differently, for example from future cash flows or from market multiples. Comparing them shows how sensitive the value is to your assumptions.

What happens to the information I enter?

The calculation runs in your browser. To get the full report you are asked for your contact details; when you send them, your details and your assessment inputs are emailed to Valorin so we can follow up if you want. Nothing is sent before you choose to submit.

Is the result tax or financial advice?

No. The result is an estimate for planning, based only on the figures and answers you enter. It is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice. For a decision, have your position reviewed against your full facts.
